Over £72,000 raised in the Surrey Peaks Walking Challenge!

On a beautiful summer’s day in July, 140 McCarthy Stone employees, suppliers, friends, and family laced up their walking boots to take on an epic challenge — covering up to 50km through the stunning Surrey Hills, all in support of the McCarthy Stone Foundation.

After last year’s Jurassic Coast challenge raised over £40,000, this year’s event has already smashed expectations, with more than £72,000 raised so far — and counting! With company matching and Gift Aid, the final total will go even further to support grassroots charities helping older people feel connected, valued, and supported.

Since it launched, the McCarthy Stone Foundation has backed over 550 small charities, providing £1.2 million in funding to help improve the lives of older people in communities across the UK.

This year’s scenic circular route kicked off in Gomshall and took walkers up and over Holmbury Hill, Box Hill, and Leith Hill – the highest point in South East England. Some early risers set off at 5:30am to conquer the full 50km, while others completed a still-impressive 29km trek. The first finishers crossed the line at 2pm – and one superstar colleague even ran the full 50km in just over six hours!

With 13 checkpoints along the way, volunteers handed out water, sweets, and ice lollies to keep spirits high. The team from RAW Adventures were on hand all day to keep everyone safe and on track.

The challenge may be over, but the JustGiving page is still live — and McCarthy Stone is matching every donation, meaning your support goes even further. Every penny helps make a difference.

After crossing the finish line, walkers were welcomed to a well-earned celebration at Shere & Peaslake Scout Hut, where food, drinks and plenty of shade gave everyone a chance to rest and reflect on a fantastic day.

Thanks to this amazing effort, the Foundation can continue supporting vital projects, like:

  • The Attic Theatre Company in Merton, offering movement sessions for people living with dementia and their carers

  • Intergenerational Music Making, which brings joy and connection to older people through the power of music

Julia Laister, Head of the Foundation and event lead, shared:

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the support and generosity shown by everyone who took part. It was such a brilliant day – and knowing that this will directly help so many older people makes it all the more meaningful. A massive thank you to our amazing McCarthy Stone colleagues, our families, our suppliers, and to RAW Adventures for keeping us all safe and smiling. You’ve all made a real difference.”
